A Harry Potter Bookcase - DIY Pallet Furniture Projects
Video Channel: thepoultrypeople
A great diy project for you to make, following on from the Discworld bookcase I made this Harry Potter Hogwarts style half sized bookshelf from a few pallets I had left. I didnt have enough wood to make a full size so went half size.
I used the Evolution R255 to make the cuts, a good sliding mitre saw thats ideal for pallet projects as itll deal with the occasional nail without a hitch. Evolution R255 SMS http://amzn.to/2Sk6H3S
I cut the slots for the shelves using the Hitachi half inch router which I cant recommend, the speed control is now goosed and without that some bits cant be used and im going to need a replacement.
To cut the slots mark the bottom using a square edge, lay the shelf on the line and mark to the width of the board. I used a 10mm double flute to rebate a slot to take the shelves and the front frieze.
I also used the same combination to cut out the rebates for the plaques on the sides. Quite deep so i used a lift and drop method to clear out the wood and then orbital motions to clear it all out.
Use a chisel to clean and straighten the corners.
I used the makita red and blue quarter inch routers for the decorative designs and making up the moulding.
Apply the design using your chosen method, i always go for paper and pva glue. A 10 degree bit was used as the designs on the side were very intricate.

I do like the Makita sanders for finishing, a combination of the finishing sander and belt sander does what you need from it. The angle grinder with flap disks is great if youre wood is rough cut to begin with.

Burnt using lichtenberg figure technique.
The carved letters were highlighted using the pyrography machine. A good investment and its done a lot of work.

Finished with OSMO poly X satin, applied with a brush and then wipe back the excess with a sponge. Apply the secoond layer 24hrs later this time with just the sponge.
